Using Cards in RRI

Briefly…

We have found that specialised decks of cards can be used very effectively to support some aspects of Responsible Research and Innovation.

The best-established set of RRI-related cards are the Moral IT cards. These work well to support a relatively detailed discussion of a particular technology proposal.

We have recently developed a set of “high level” RRI Prompts and Practice Cards. These are intended to be relatively lightweight and quick to use. They are based on the AREA framework and can be used to discuss RRI issues and identify areas of strength and weakness and areas for further action.

Several other decks of cards have also been developed and should be available soon:

  • Ethics in Research Cards
  • Equality, Diversity and Inclusion cards
  • Policy cards

In more detail…

In these approaches, each card typically represents a key concept or issue within a particular knowledge domain.

Different activities can be done with the same deck of cards, but often one or two specific activities have been developed for each deck of cards. These activities may include selecting, discussing and sorting cards and through them the concepts or issues that they represent.

The cards can be used in physical face-to-face sessions, but digital versions of the cards can also be used in online sessions, e.g. in the Miro shared whiteboard application.

We have also been working on Cardographer, an online platform for creating and analysing decks of cards and card use. More details to follow…
