Systems that autonomously detect fraud in retail returns are increasingly being used and are controversial. In this project, we will create the principles and guidelines for ensuring that such systems are fair and transparent.
To this end, we will explore (1) The techniques, algorithms, and current best practices for detecting fraud, (2) the laws and regulations relevant to such systems and potential gaps, and (3) the current concerns of retailers and consumers. We will draw on existing general guidelines for trustworthy autonomous systems, such as EU guidelines for AI systems.
