Siddartha Khastgir, TAS Fellowships Lead tbc

10:30    Workshop 1: Responsible Research and innovation

Professor Elvira Perez & Dr Peter Craigon, University of Nottingham tbc

This interactive session will explore Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) and how to implement anticipation, reflection, and action/responsiveness practices throughout your research project or PhD. Using a relevant case study as an illustration, you will be able to monitor and reflect on your progress and develop your own RRI action plan.

11:15   Break

11:30   Workshop 1: continued

12:15   Lunch and networking

13:15   Workshop 2: Safety Assurance and Certification of Autonomous Systems

Nick Bennett and tbc, Thales UK

The future will see autonomous systems operating in complex environments and making informed decisions without human interaction. The risks associated with this are yet to be fully understood, and consideration of the requisite control measures, assurances and certification requirements is ongoing. As part of this session, you will:

  • Learn about the assurance and certification of autonomous systems, and the challenges faced by those developing capabilities in this space.
  • Develop an outline assurance and certification plan for an autonomous system, factoring in the information and actions required to ensure that a system can be demonstrated to be safe.

15:15    Break

15:30    Keynote Talk: Coders as legislators? Legal, ethical and technical implications of code as law  tbc

Professor Burkhard Schafer, Edinburgh Law School, University of Edinburgh

This talk will aim to bring the preceding workshop themes together by asking what issues we face, from legal, ethical and technological perspectives, if we try to prove that a system is law compliant. Using examples from road traffic law, we will discuss how value-sensitive decisions need to be made when translating legal provisions into executable code, and discuss the responsibilities that come with such a role.

16:30    Closing remarks

17:00   End
