We are delighted to announce that the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) has shortlisted REFORMIST’s Oesophageal cancer work for their Engineers in Society award.

Bringing together a diverse team of experts in oesophageal cancer research, surgery, radiology, computer science, patient advocacy, public health, and artificial intelligence, the REFORMIST team is tackling the key challenges faced by multi-disciplinary teams (MDTs).

By integrating machine learning and AI technologies, the project seeks to improve treatment decisions, enhance patient outcomes, and combat health inequalities. The team’s interdisciplinary approach promotes fairness, precision, and transformative improvements in oesophageal cancer care, pushing the boundaries of both patient decision-making and healthcare AI.

Project lead Dr Ganesh Vigneswaran, NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Interventional Radiology, said of the announcement:

“It’s really exciting to see that our teamwork is being recognised. We celebrate the diversity and impact of our team which encompasses specialists in Oesophageal Cancer Research, surgery, radiology, computer sciences, public health, patient advocates and AI to tackle critical challenges faced by multidisciplinary teams to improve patient care.”

The project was funded in the final Pump Priming round of the TAS Hub and ran from April 2023 – August 2024.

Professor Gopal Ramchurn, TAS Hub Director and CEO of Responsible AI UK, said:

“This project looked to integrate Artificial Intelligence into the cancer care process in a way that ensured it was trusted by the clinicians and patients alike.  Oesophageal cancer is one of the worst cancers with very limited treatment options. We need to do our best to help patients recover and extend their quality of life. AI will play a key role in this in future.”

“This award is a great recognition of the team effort led by Southampton researchers and the TAS Hub involving medics, computer scientists, and social scientists working together closely.  I am very pleased for the team and for the TAS community at large.”

The IET Engineers in Society Award recognises engineering projects across the world that have made significant positive impacts on society in three categories: Sustainability and Climate Change, Digital Futures, and Healthy Lives.

The winners will be announced at the IET Excellence and Innovation Awards Ceremony on Wednesday 4 December 2024 at The Library of Birmingham.
